What we learned last today:

Philosophy is study of reality, truth, goodness, and beauty that is deep, wide, and systematic.

That there are four divisions of philosophy. Metaphysics studies the basic principles of reality. Epistemology studies the basic principles of truth and knowledge. Ethics studies the basic principles of good and bad. Aesthetics studies the basic principles of beauty.

Thyat there is two general approaches to philosophy: the analytic and the synthetic approaches. The analytic approaches attempt to find basic principles by breaking wholes into parts until fundamental parts are discovered. The synthetic approach attempts to build up fundamental wholes that are more than their parts.

The analytic approach has two main traditions. There are those who find that reality consists of many different fundamental parts and those who find that it consists of only one fundamental part.

The synthetic approach has two main traditions. There are those who find that reality consists of only one unified whole and those who find that reality consists of many unified wholes.

For the next meeting, you should have completed the tutorial and homework on the disk under Identifying Arguments.
